EarthWindFire Science Club invited Dr. Gretchen Ionta to give an illustrated lecture. Club members and guests learned about the challenges and pleasures of conducting a botanical collecting expedition, and about what happens to the collected specimens afterward. November 13.

Regional Science Olympiad
A regional competition of the middle school Science Olympiad was held at Gordon State College on March 1. Assistance was provided by the Science Club.
Barn Owl Nest Box construction
In March and April, club members built three boxes for placement within Georgia. Barn owls have big families! The boxes measured 41" x 12" x 16."

On The admissions officer of the School of Forestry visited, along with a Gordon alumna who is now a student there. Participants learned about the wide variety of majors (not just related to trees!!!!) available in this program. Placement of graduates in jobs was also discussed. Wednesday, November 1.

We saw the Chihuly exhibit of (very impressive) blown glass, not to mention the 'poison" frogs and the orchids and other plants. Thursday, October 21.
Halloween fundraiser Oct. 25-29
This was a successful fundraiser, and we thank the faculty, staff, and students of Gordon College for their support of our field trip fund.
Science Demonstrations
On November 17 at 7:30 pm, we were treated to Science Demonstrations by our own Dr. Richard Schmude. Physical and chemical principles were explored inside the building, (yes, explosions were involved) and we also went out to gaze at the night sky under the guidance of Dr. Schmude.

The club sponsored a presentation by Mary Elfner of the GA Department of Natural Resources (DNR). She spoke about watersheds, water clean-up and careers with the DNR.

The weather was beautiful. We paddled down the river in canoes, picking up trash in the river and on the bank. Commemorative T-shirts were distributed upon our return. We picked up lots of trash, including an old plastic trash can, a tire, drawer from a refrigerator, etc., and we had fun!

Mars and Stars: A lecture and sky observation with Dr. Richard Schmude
We learned about the ice cap on the southern pole of Mars, and its sublimation patterns from year to year and season to season. Outside, we looked at "the red planet" (Mars) and had a fantastic view of the crescent moon through a telescope.
