Club members visited the Newman Wetlands Center for their annual Wetlands and Watershed Festival. October 3.

Lecture: "In the Footsteps of Erik Ekman-a Botanical Expedition to Pic Macaya National Park, Haiti"

EarthWindFire Science Club invited Dr. Gretchen Ionta to give an illustrated lecture.  Club members and guests learned about the challenges and pleasures of conducting a botanical collecting expedition, and about what happens to the collected specimens afterward. November 13.

Regional Science Olympiad
A regional competition of the middle school Science Olympiad was held at Gordon State College on March 1.  Assistance was provided by the Science Club.

 

Barn Owl Nest Box construction
In March and April, club members built three boxes for placement within Georgia.  Barn owls have big families! 

The boxes measured 41" x 12" x 16."

This was a rainy trip, but everybody was a good sport and the sun did come out for some alligator sightings at the end of the trip. March 22-24

Zinnia seeds were distributed to interested students.  April 22.

From Feb. 8-10, 13-14, club members sold Valentine's-themed and other items in the lobby of the IC.  The sale was a success and will provide extra field trip money.

Tellus Science Museum, Cartersville, GA
The club toured the museum and the solar house on March 3. Gem panning and fossil hunting were included in admission.

Physician Charmille Hare gave an inspiring presentation in which she described the rigors of preparing for, and being in, medical school.  She shared with students some of the choices she had made and opportunities she had pursued. October 20, 2010

Discussion of the Forestry School at UGA-Athens
On The admissions officer of the School of Forestry visited, along with a Gordon alumna who is now a student there.  Participants learned about the wide variety of majors (not just related to trees!!!!) available in this program.  Placement of graduates in jobs was also discussed.  Wednesday, November 1.

Telescope viewing of Mars presented by Drs. Schmude and Davies
A well-attended viewing took place with multiple telescopes placed between the Instructional Complex and Russell Hall on Monday, Nov. 7.

The latest information on pharmacy schools was presented, and a representative from Mercer School of Pharmacy was in attendance.  Organized by Dr. Dan Jackson.

Georgia Aquarium Trip

Valentine’s Fundraiser
Weekdays from February 8-14, club members and friends sold small gift items and candy to raise money for our trip to Cumberland Island and the Okefenokee Swamp.

The weather was beautiful, but slightly chilly. We paddled down the river, picking up trash in the river and on the bank.  Commemorative T-shirts were distributed upon our return.  Saturday, October 16.

Visit to the Atlanta Botanical Garden
We saw the Chihuly exhibit of (very impressive) blown glass, not to mention the “poison” frogs and the orchids and other plants.  Thursday, October 21.

Halloween fundraiser Oct. 25-29
This was a successful fundraiser, and we thank the faculty, staff, and students of Gordon College for their support of our field trip fund.

Science Demonstrations
On November 17 at 7:30 pm, we were treated to Science Demonstrations by our own Dr. Richard Schmude.  Physical and chemical principles were explored inside the building, (yes, explosions were involved) and we also went out to gaze at the night sky under the guidance of Dr. Schmude.

Guest speaker December 1
The club sponsored a presentation by Mary Elfner of the GA Department of Natural Resources (DNR).  She spoke about watersheds, water clean-up and careers with the DNR.

"Rivers Alive" Clean-up of the Flint River
The weather was beautiful. We paddled down the river in canoes, picking up trash in the river and on the bank.  Commemorative T-shirts were distributed upon our return.  We picked up lots of trash, including an old plastic trash can, a tire, drawer from a refrigerator, etc., and we had fun!

There was a good turnout of students eager to learn about the variety of health professions programs offered at MCG.

Mars and Stars:  A lecture and sky observation with Dr. Richard Schmude

We learned about the ice cap on the southern pole of Mars, and its sublimation patterns from year to year and season to season.  Outside, we looked at "the red planet" (Mars) and had a fantastic view of the crescent moon through a telescope.

Visit the Rock Ranch—cancelled (The Rock Ranch could not accommodate us at that time.)
Learn about calving, and see calves born (if they and the cows cooperate)
